Akiko is one of only two Japanese-born winemakers in the U.S., from what I could find – and it’s not surprising that both have chosen to hone their craft in Sonoma County, CA. Akiko was born in Tokyo and moved to the area after meeting her husband, Ken. The story of how they met is most unusual and charming, which you’ll hear in the interview.  You’ll also discover how they (eventually) came to establish their own winery with Akiko as the winemaker.

Adding to the history is their participation in establishing the newest California AVA (American Viticultural Area), the West Sonoma Coast, founded by the West Sonoma Coast Vinters.  That topic is also discussed in the interview.

Their path into winemaking is as distinctive as many who have ventured into the wine business, driven by their unique passion and motivation. I met with them in their rural winery setting, which is a hidden gem in Sonoma County. It’s well worth the visit.
