I’m hitting the long road again, riding 280 horses (hp) to Southern Oregon to visit Cowhorn Vineyard and Garden in the Applegate Wine region. It’s about 30 minutes SW of Medford. You may have heard my previous interviews from Southern Oregon, which focused on the expansive Rogue Valley (see DANCIN & Weisinger Family here). My wife and I stayed in Ashland, a couple of nights, but we were also invited to settle in Cowhorn’s Overlook, a beautiful, modern house perched above the vineyard. Photos are below. Cowhorn Bioynamic Vineyard and Garden is a Petal-certified Building under the Living Building Challenge 2.1 by the International Living Future Institute.  The tasting room is LEED-certified, has a small footprint, yet includes a prep kitchen, restrooms, an office, case storage, and two wine libraries. Tastings can also be enjoyed outside. The property also has a small pond with a fountain that appeals to ducks, and a creek passes by. They have blankets if you want to have lunch near the water features. 

Women-owned and women-run

I was alerted about the young owner of Cowhorn Dynamic Vineyard and Winery, Mini Byers, just 29 years young! She is also involved with Johan vineyards in Willamette Valley, Cowhorn Kitchen and Wine in Jacksonville, and Tu Tu Tun Lodge, where the Rogue River meets the Pacific. You may imagine she is incredibly busy, but I was able to connect with her experienced winemaker, Vince Vadrine. As usual, my wife Meredith took on the role of photographer. Vince fills us in on his winemaking history, the biodynamic farming at Cowhorn, and the grape varieties they grow in the Applegate wine region. A trip to the area is well worth it. There’s so much to see and experience, of which we took full advantage!
